Amtrak – Northeast Regional
a train ride
is such a sweet relief -
the men and women
who check tickets are
so friendly, so courteous -
I watch as the Pennsylvania
sunset becomes the Delaware
sunset becomes the Maryland
nightfall becomes Chocolate City
darkness -
church steeples
oil rigs
smoke stacks
Old Glory unfurled -
I watch it all from my window.
the end we think we seek is not near
and it’s not the end
and it’s not what we seek -
Her feet are hurting
in those high-heeled shoes
but she won’t listen to them
when they speak.
